Join an enthusiastic and dedicated group of volunteers who keep the museum and trains “on track!” You can take an active part in helping us build an exceptional living railroad museum and providing fun and educational train rides. Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum has a volunteer opportunity for everyone with a variety of interests, abilities and skill levels.

BSRM provides an enjoyable and fun working atmosphere. Volunteering with the BSRM is an opportunity for you to experience railroad operations first hand. BSRM trains operate on an active rail line and routinely operate with other trains on the line. As a member of a train crew, you will learn about railroad safety, railroad operations and the rules that govern train movements and operations. Our operating crews are fully trained and qualified to meet Federal Railroad Administration and Housatonic Railroad Company requirements. Train crew volunteers typically begin as Coach Attendants and must advance through the BSRM training curriculum. Train crew volunteers must attend yearly training classes and are required to pass written examinations and are subject to pre-employment and random drug screens. Volunteering with the BSRM is working on the railroad! Positions include: Conductor, Engineer, Brakeman, Trainman and Coach Attendant.

Equipment Restoration/Maintenance
In addition to learning and experiencing railroad operations on an active and historic rail line, our volunteers have the opportunity to help restore and maintain our fleet of vintage railroad equipment and historic buildings. Our volunteers work on all aspects of keeping the railroad “rolling.” Take pride in putting vintage workhorses back in service! In addition to help with equipment, we are also in need of the “handyman” to help with building repair, grounds maintenance, and carpentry and painting projects. There is a place for everyone and every skill at the BSRM, please consider spending some time with us!

Museum Operations
Join us in welcoming visitors from around the world by staffing the museum store, managing our archives, assisting in fundraising, grant writing and educating the public about railroading in the Berkshires. Together, we can provide a fun and memorable educational experience for all generations! We are in particular need for help in organizing special events and fundraising. Available positions include: Ticket Agent, Museum Store Clerk, and Museum Tour Guide.

All volunteers receive a subscription to our newsletter, a copy of our annual report, a 25% discount in the museum store and unlimited rides on regularly scheduled trains. Contact us for more information on how you can get started right away!

Donations and Planned Giving

In addition to becoming a member and/or volunteer, there are other ways to help support the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum’s mission to foster interest in the history of railroading in Western Massachusetts. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, you can invest in the acquisition, restoration and operation of vintage railroad equipment as well as the continuing preservation of Lenox station and historical artifacts by creating your own legacy through planned giving. Although ticket sales for our train rides help to cover the cost of our operating expenses, the museum is in need of funds to restore and maintain its vintage fleet of operating equipment. We are also seeking funding to build an engine shop and freight station. Please click here for information on our current projects and our master plan.

As a friend and benefactor, you will receive great satisfaction knowing that you have contributed to the museum’s on-going efforts to create a premier railroad museum and preserve part of our nation’s history through your generosity. We are happy to discuss these possibilities with you and offer any additional information you may need. For more information on the following options, please contact us!

We are always grateful for any type of donation to the museum, no matter how small or large. Although we rely on our volunteers for labor, our operating expenses and needs are always an ever-present concern. Any donation of cash or tangible goods is always warmly appreciated.

Engineer: $500-1000; Cab Ride; Newsletter; Annual Report

Conductor: $1000-$2500; Private coach charter on scheduled train; newsletter; annual report

Trainmaster: $2500 and above; full train charter; newsletter; annual report

Please consider including the museum in your will, retirement plan, or life insurance policy. These are some of the possible ways of making a bequest. A bequest may be made for a specific purpose or general operating needs.

Personal Property
Please consider leaving a gift of capital assets, including equipment, antiques and other railroad related items to the museum. We are always looking to obtain historical artifacts to be placed on display or added to our library for future generations to enjoy.
