This day-long session will feature classroom instruction and hands-on training that will give participants their chance to experience how locomotive engineers are trained and what skills they must possess to operate a 120- ton locomotive. The course will culminate with participants operating our 1953 EMD SW-8 #8619 in our rail yard. The Locomotive Experience makes for a full and unique experience you won’t be able to find anywhere else! This also makes a great gift for that special someone who thought they’d done everything!
TO PARTICPARE, YOU MUST MEET THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Participants must be 18 years of age or older, hold a valid driver’s license in your state or country of residence, and be physically able to climb into the cab of the locomotive and walk around the rail yard on un-even surfaces.
Partcipants will report for duty at Lenox Station at 9:30am. All participants will take part in a classroom instruction session, where you will review safety rules and basic operating rules, culminating in a simple quiz. You will also be instructed in the basics of locomotive mechanical, electrical, and air-brake systems. You will also be instructed in Federal Railroad Administration regulations as they pertain to locomotive operation.
After the classroom session, there will be a half-hour break for lunch. All participants are responsible for their own lunches. Beverages are available.
Following lunch will be the hands-on session with the locomotive. All participants will perform a daily inspection, pre-start inspections and tests. Participants will be instructed on how to start the locomotive and perform post-start inspections and tests. After you perform air-brake tests and fill-out all required paperwork, the instructor will demonstrate the operation of the locomotive, and then will supervise as each participant operates the locomotive in the yard. The instructor and a brakeman will demonstrate coupling to a coach, and then will supervise as each participant performs the move. If time permits, Instructor oversees each participant operating the locomotive with a coach.
REQUIRED OF ALL PARTICIPANTS:
You must be dressed in “work clothes” which can be jeans, cover-alls, over-alls, etc. You must be wearing work boots with ankle support. Sneakers, sandals, loafers, flip-flops, etc. are unacceptable. You will need a pair of leather work gloves. You will be handling various parts of the locomotive and should be prepared to get greasy and dirty!
PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE:
A current copy of BSRM Safety Rules. These will be e-mailed to you as a PDF document about one week prior to your session. You will also receive an “Honorary Engineer” certificate suitable for framing upon completion of the program. All participants will get a photo opportunity with the locomotive and you in the Engineer’s seat.
Each session is limited to four (4) students. You must register and reserve your seat in the program for a select date. The cost to participate is $200 with a non-refundable $25 deposit to reserve your seat. All proceeds from “The Locomotive Experience” help restore, maintain and preserve our vintage fleet of railroad equipment.
